Doggie therapy: Canines help kids improve reading skills

When first-grader Cameron Mansfield wants to practice reading out loud, he knows he will always find a willing listener in Cosmo.
Cosmo, a five-year-old Havanese, is the pooch half of the Canine Assisted Therapy team that visits Embassy Creek Elementary in Cooper City every Friday to help kids with their reading skills. Six first-graders participate in the program, which started in December.
The children meet with Cosmo and his owner, Anna Sokoloff of Pembroke Pines, once a week for 30 minutes. In that time, the kids read to the dog and do literacy-based crafts.
